Faculty Honoraria
Generally, honoraria for internal service by MIT faculty are not allowed. While visitors or faculty from outside MIT may be issued reasonable honoraria for lectures etc., these activities are considered part of MIT faculty institutional responsibilities.
Exceptions
Exceptions will only be granted in extraordinary cases when the activity involves a substantial investment of time and effort, outside of the normal parameters of institutional responsibilities. These should be sent to the dean’s office for their oversight and approval before coming to the provost and must be accompanied by quantified and written significant justification for the exception. The Provost’s Office will only consider requests that meet a very high standard of exception. These will be handled as a supplement salary payments and not an honorarium.
