Ad Hoc Committee on Arts, Culture, and DEI
As part of a set of July 2020 commitments to confront history, challenge common assumptions, and incorporate previously marginalized voices, MIT convened the Ad Hoc Committee on Arts, Culture, and DEI to activate the arts and humanities in this effort. The committee submitted its report in April 2022, making recommendations to create an arts festival, increasing support for student groups, diversify MIT’s public art collection, developing and enhance tours of the campus, and evaluate the legacy of Francis Amasa Walker, MIT’s third president. Beginning in December 2022, an implementation committee coordinated working groups on the first four recommendations; their final report to the Provost was submitted in June 2024. A study on Walker is proceeding under the direction of faculty from MIT’s History section and senior leadership.

Ad Hoc Committee on Graduate Advising and Mentoring
The Ad Hoc Committee on Graduate Advising and Mentoring’s primary aim was to deliver a strategic plan to guide policies and programs to be implemented at MIT. A central component of MIT’s graduate education is the opportunity for students to learn from and model their faculty mentors. Excellence in graduate student mentoring and advising is a fundamental responsibility of our faculty and fosters innovation and scholarship. Programs and policies that support faculty and students in this regard are essential to the Institute’s mission.
